Review: Revenant by Larissa Ione

Revenant

Author: Larissa Ione
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Series: Lords of Deliverance #6, Demonica #11
Pages: Mass Market Paperback, 368 pages
Genre: PNR
Release Date: December 16th 2014

Summary:

HELL HATH NO FURY . . .

For five thousand years, Revenant believed he was alone in the world, a fallen angel beyond any redemption. Now he finds he has a twin brother who had all the light and love Revenant was denied. Caught in a tug of war between Heaven and Hell, he must weigh his thirst for revenge against his desire for a mysterious female named Blaspheme—a female whose very origins could deliver him into salvation . . . or destruction.

LIKE AN ANGEL SCORNED

Blaspheme has a deadly secret: she's the forbidden offspring of an angel and a fallen angel. Hunted by both heavenly and satanic forces, she has survived only by laying low and trusting no one. When Revenant claims he can save them both, how can she possibly believe him? But the powerful angel is persistence incarnate and for Blaspheme, there's no place she can hide in Heaven or Hell where he won't find her . .

Review:

This is the sixth book of the Lords of Deliverance series or as I renamed it, "Welcome to Revenant's pity party" .

I really loved the 5 books of the Demonica series as well as the firsts three of the Lord of Deliverance. But after the uneven and tepid-ish Reseph's as well as Reaver's books I wasn't that excited about Revenant's book.

Where Reaver's character was introduced very early in the Demonica series and had steady appearances through out both Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series, Revenant only appeared in Reaver's book. As the Lords of Deliverance series is about the four horsemen of apocalypse, when I heard that a fifth book was coming my first thought was "$, here I come", but on the other hand given Reaver's part in both series, I understood that Larissa Ione wanted to write a book dedicated to his story. But, not only the book was a disappointment, but LI managed to finagle a sixth book out of it by giving him a twin.

Here's a short list of the things that didn't work for me in this book:

1/ Beside what's in the blurb, we have little back story about Revenant but it was repeated many times as Revenant whined and bitched about his fate. As if we couldn't understand it, and needed many reminders of his sad sad past and so unfair present. *rolls eyes*

Note to author: whining heroes are NOT sexy.

2/ Same goes for Blaspheme. Like Revenant, despite the fact that she was a minor side character in other books, she too had no character development.

3/ Not only Revenant and Blaspheme had no character development but their "love" story suffered of the same fate.

-> The result of this is that I couldn't care less for either of them or their supposed love story. And don't get me started on the sex scenes.

4/ A super weak plot that was inexistent for most of the book and was solved in one chapter... Yeah, that was thrilling. Not.

5/ Beside Eidolon, most of the major characters in the series acted like asses. As if Revenant needed any more fuel to his pity party...

Listening to this book I longed for one of Anne Stuart true and unabashed gamma heroes. The reason I rounded up the rating to 2 stars is that despite the bore that was Revenant's book, Larissa Ione managed to close the loop between the 2 series.

Last but not least, I want to say that the dull narrating didn't help

Review:

To be honest I was a little anxious before I started reading Kaleidoscope, because despite the fact that KA is one of my favorite authors and I can countlessly re-read some of her old books I really had problems enjoying some of her last releases. Also, I know, that for some readers their favorite authors can't do no good, but it's not my case, and Jagged, the previous book in this series, was not only a huge disappointment but an almost DNF for me. Fortunately, even though it doesn't have the magic of the firsts four books in the Colorado Mountain series, that wasn't the case with Kaleidoscope.

We met Deck in Breathe, he's Chace's best friend. He is a gorgeous genius and a PI who isn't afraid to use unorthodox means to reach his goals. When Chace asks for his help in a difficult case, he accepts the meeting:

"So, before we talk this through with you, you know that if you take this on, you do this by the book. You're deputized, you report, you take orders and I'll repeat, you don't go maverick," Mick continued and Deck drew in breath.
Then he stated it plain.
"My understanding of this meet is, if I wanna take this on, and seein' if I do, my usual charges will need to be significantly discounted considering you can't afford to pay them as I charge them, it'll need to be somethin' I really wanna do. And you got a reputation I admire, Shaughnessy, so I hope you take no offense but I don't take orders. I work a case how I feel it needs to be worked. I report what I feel is necessary. And last, I only do maverick."

Emme ex-best friend was Deck's girl friend. They haven't seen each other for years and now, she somehow is in the middle of the case Jacobs is investigating. Although she wasn't my favorite KA heroine and I didn't understand why she did some of the things she did in the book, she was an ok heroine.

Also, a thing I would never understand is how fashion accessories can turn plain heroines into knockout girls. Sure, clothes, make up, the right hair do, the attitude,... can help enhance a person, transform her from plain to pretty. But from plain to totally gorgeous? No.

The things I really liked in this book are, Deck, his relationship with Emme, and last but not least, the participation of Chace, Tate, Ty and Max.

About the author:

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Excerpt

I looked out my office window, down to the yard, my eyes to the bustling activity, and I did this tapping my phone on my desk.
I should be working but I wasn’t thinking about work.
I was thinking about Jacob.
More precisely, I was thinking about calling Jacob, had an overwhelming urge to do so.
I was also trying not to do so because I had a boyfriend, even though he was a boyfriend I wasn’t all that sure about. He was sweet, he was into me, but he was just… off.
Then again, I didn’t have a lot of experience so what did I know?
Additionally, after my dinner with Jacob last night, within an hour, I’d called him after ten at night and now it was only eleven thirty the next day.
I didn’t want him to think I was psycho, and calling him would imply psycho behavior. Further, when I called him last night, I’d asked him to dinner, which was dinner two nights in a row with a woman he hadn’t seen in nine years, a woman with a boyfriend, and that was semi-psycho.
Okay, maybe it was totally psycho.
I didn’t want Jacob to think I was psycho.
Ever.
But I wanted to hear his voice. I wanted to connect with him on the phone. I’d missed him and I liked having him back. I liked it a great deal.
I also missed him a great deal.
And I needed to ask him something. Further, he was the only one I could ask.
I looked from the yard to my phone. My mind telling my thumb not to do it, my thumb not listening, I found Jacob’s contact and hit go.
I put it to my ear.
“I’m a psycho,” I whispered and luckily finished whispering two seconds before Jacob’s voice sounded.
“You okay?” he answered.
He kept asking that mostly, I figured, because I kept calling when I didn’t need to so he probably thought something was wrong.
Or that I was a psycho.
“I need to know if you don’t eat anything,” I lied.
Actually, it wasn’t a lie. Although I remembered a lot about Jacob (most everything, in all honesty), I couldn’t recall if there was something specific he didn’t like to eat.
I could recall how beautiful he was, how tall he was, how strong he was. I could recall how smart he was and how funny he was. I could recall how cool he was with me. I could also recall how much I missed him. But I couldn’t recall if he didn’t like chicken.
But that wasn’t the only thing I needed to know. I needed to know something else too.
Much like last night, when he didn’t make me feel like a psycho, in fact, the opposite and sounded like he was happy to hear from me and would be willing to talk all night, he again sounded like me psychotically calling him yet again in a precursor to stalker way was no big deal.
“I don’t eat it, I’ll pick it off.”
“You can’t pick it off if I cook with it in it or if the mainstay of dinner on the whole is what you don’t eat,” I informed him.
“You makin’ Indian food?” he asked.
“No. Don’t you like Indian food?” I asked back.
“Love it,” he answered.
“Then why’d you ask if I was making Indian food?”
“ ’Cause I hoped you were.”
I burst out laughing.
No, Jacob definitely didn’t make me feel like I was being a psycho.
When I quit laughing, I told him, “Sorry, honey, I don’t know how to make Indian food.”
“Shame,” he muttered, a smile in his deep, attractive voice, and if I was on an infrared scanner, specific parts of me would have shown up hotter.
You have a boyfriend, Emme! I told myself.
For a while, I answered myself.
Jacob is also your ex–best friend’s ex-boyfriend, Emme! I reminded myself.
So? I asked myself.
I shoved those thought aside, thoughts that, if anyone knew I was talking to myself in my head might prove I was indeed a psycho, and pointed out to Jacob, “You haven’t actually answered the question.”
“I’ll eat what you cook, Emme. Cook what you like.”
He was such a nice guy.
He always was.
Nice. Tall (very tall). Handsome (unbelievably handsome). Smart (so damned smart). Funny. Interesting. Gentlemanly. And a repeat of nice because it was worth a repeat since he was just that nice.
I liked all that about him. I liked that he wore his dark hair way too long. I liked that sometimes a thick hank of it fell over his forehead and into his eye. I liked that he was who he was and didn’t wear designer jeans or put gel in his hair. I liked that, even considering he was extortionately intelligent, in fact, a genius, he never made anyone feel less than him because they weren’t as smart. I liked that he never acted superior or arrogant and with all that was him, looks, body, brains, he was one person who could. And I liked that he liked to do what he liked to do, he did what he liked to do and wouldn’t get pushed into doing something he didn’t want.
Like Elsbeth tried to do.
He’d lost her to that and he’d accepted it. I knew it killed. He’d loved her to distraction. But he refused to be the man she wanted him to be and instead was the man he was.
She should have seen she had it all even if he didn’t make bucketloads of money and thus couldn’t give her the life she was used to getting from her daddy. Country clubs, tennis lessons, vacations in villas in Italy and beaches in Thailand, fabulous homes kept by maids and fabulous meals cooked by cooks.
She didn’t see all she had.
Stupid.

Review:

I'm a huge fan of the first 12 books of the IAD series. For me, things started to go sour with the first Dacians book and continued to go downhill with MacRieve (that promised so much). With this one I think that I'm definitely out of love with this series.

Before I start, I would like to say that after the epilogue in MacRieve, I didn't understand why the next one was about Lanthe and Thronos and not about MacRieve's twin since that's what the epilogue is about.

If I had to resume my review in one word, it would be B O R I N G

Why boring?

- Because of the too many mulling over thoughts/talks/resentments about the same themes. Damn but if it's something they are expert at it certainly is moving in circles. This alone suffices to bore me to tears.

- Then nothing much happens and the little that does happens are bad recycling of things already done and re-done or roll eyes festivals. The landing in the belly of a beast was done in Star Wars, to name the most obvious reference. Han Solo landed the Millennium Falcon and here they teleported themselves but it's the same thing, different mean. Same with the beast feeding them hallucinogens while digesting them alive. That one is an X-Files stuff. In the X-Files Mulder and Scully are the victims of a huge mushroom organism, but again, same thing, different mean. Dragons sitting on huge piles of gold... Rings a bell anyone? And so on...

I'm not against the recycling of used ideas or even clichés, but at least do it well and cleverly.

- The "blindness" of Thronos toward his brother's wrongdoings for centuries... I mean, really? He wasn't a recluse, they are neighbors on a tiny island and for most of these centuries they were close, and he never got the smallest hint that things weren't as they should have been? Is he dumb or dumber?

- If that wasn't enough, I couldn't care less for the heroes, and at time it was so sweet my teeth hurt. So yeah, boring.

- The end was a WTF festival. I mean, really?????

The saddest thing is that even Nïx didn't manage to make things more interesting and with the little tidbits KC gave us, I'm more and more convinced that the following books are not going to get better.

This series is based on enemies become lovers with lots of adventure, and while it worked it was great but Kresley Cole obviously ran out of juices.

You can have the most beautiful pieces of fabric (which was definitely not the case here), without the thread to bind them, you'll never be able to have a patchwork quilt. Same goes with stories telling...

Review:

After The Will, I swore I was done with KA's new releases but I put her Unfinished Heroes series in my series challenge so I felt bound to read this one thinking it couldn't be worse than The Will.

I wasn't wrong but that doesn't mean that Deacon was good. Far be it.

The book started slow and I didn't mind it. Things started to go sour for me when after 6 years of short and random encounters Deacon and Cassidy had a kind of insta love thing. I could have dealt with the too sweet it hurt my teeth turn the story took if only:

1) there was an actual plot. Not only the story started slow, but it never took off. To be totally honest, I read small children stories (and by that I mean books with lots of pictures and little text) more exciting than Deacon.

2) the constant badass references to Deacon, were backed by real badass action by said Deacon.

3) if they had conversations that actually made sense. I swear, the dialogs were beyond ridiculous.

4) KA managed to make me believe in their insta love. I have nothing against insta love plots, but here it was just not believable.

5) so many things didn't make me roll my eyes. One of them being Deacon back story. How sad is that?

6) I could care for Cassidy or Deacon.

7) there wasn't BDSM. They have a vanilla relationship, and out of the blue they start BDSM plays... I'm sorry but as far as I'm concerned, even in her other books, BDSM isn't KA's forte.

8) (view spoiler) Just saying...

Thank you, V for buddy reading this with me! :-****

Home is a place with too many memories, and departure is the sweetest possible distraction. As soon as she arrives at her destination, Stella visits the airport bar. She orders a drink and waits for the right guy to come along. A bored businessman, a backpacker, a baggage handler just off shift. If he's into a hot, no-strings hookup, he's perfect. Each time is a thrilling escape from reality that gives the term layover a whole new meaning. When Stella meets the enigmatic Matthew in Chicago one weekend, she hits some serious turbulence. Something about him tells her she's not the only one running from the past. The connection between them is explosive, and for the first time, one taste is not enough for Stella. But returning to find a gorgeous man waiting for her is the easy part& facing the reason she's there is a whole other matter.

Review:
For me, Megan Hart is a go to author. I might not read her books straight when they are released but I know that eventually I will read them – unless they are serials and in that case I'll just boycott them.

Unlike her other contemporary Erotica, Flying is written in the third POV. Like her other contemporary Erotica the building is slow, unfortunately and unlike her other books that I've read so far, the slow building leads to... nowhere .

For the first time while reading a MH book I had a really hard time trying to enjoy the heroine. Stella is a 40 something divorced woman and mother of a 17 years old boy. When the fancy takes her, she flies to other cities to have one night stands with absolute strangers. I didn't mind that. I really did not. I even didn't mind (view spoiler) What I did mind however was her coldness and borderline rudeness when she is on the prowl.

The book is full of miscellaneous bits and pieces that bring nothing to the story. Even the reason why she's "addicted" to the one night stands isn't clear. I'm sorry but if I see the connection between the tragedy that happened in Stella's life and her divorce I don't see how it is connected to her long string of one night stands.

Also, at the beginning of the book Stella says: "In her twenties Stella had taught herself how to be sexy for a man; it was until she was older that she discovered it was so much better to be sexy for herself." but the fine lingerie, just like her wigs, false nails and aliases is actually no more than a tool for when she is "flying". The first time she is flying for work she is caught unaware in granny panties... When I was 19 I discovered the pleasure of fine lingerie for myself and I can tell you that to this day this would never ever happens to me.

The Flashbacks didn't help either. And to be totally honest I also didn't get Craig parts. Then at the 50% marks or so enters Matthew and for the 90 % of the rest of the book he just acts like a jerk. And Stella just deals with his shit.

And last but not least we have the "What. The. Hell?!?!" kind of end. I don't mind Megan Hart "happy for now" kind of ends but after the mess of this book, this was pushing it a bit too far for my liking.

Review:

Nalini Singh is one of my favorite authors as well as one of the best paranormal romance writer ever. She's one of the three authors whose books are automatic buy for me. She really has the knack to not only build great characters and relationships, create amazing worlds building but also and most importantly unlike many authors writing PNR, her series are coherent, originals, not dragged for the sake of it or suddenly overflowing with dubious new characters brought in for the purpose of helping dragging said series.

Years ago, a buddy reader bugged me to try her Psy-Changeling series. She was raving endlessly about it but at that time, the series already had nine books released so I was a bit hesitant and weary to start it (that's the effect long series usually have on me). Moreover, and even though I do enjoy science fiction stories, I wasn't sure I would like the futuristic and Psy parts of the series. But I checked her work and decided to begin with her contemporary romances and if I liked them I'll give a go to the Psy-Changelings. Not only did I really enjoyed the stories but the way she described her heroes and the relationship building was what made me start the amazing P-C series.

With Rock Addiction, I thought that I'll have the same pleasure as when I was reading her Silhouette Desire stories, but to be honest I have to say that I was a bit disappointed.

Even though the writing isn't as polished as in her other books, the story started really hot but very quickly the sex elements took over the story. I understand that it was all new, hot and shinny for them, and a part of me even found all the smexing realistic with regards to a new hot relationship starting, but reading the book it seemed to me that each time Molly and Fox met they were going at it and that was too much for me.

I do like hot stories very much, but not when it comes to the detriment of the characters and relationships building. I'm sad to say that in Rock Addiction I didn't find any of the red hot sexual tension or beautiful sensuality, Nalini Singh used me to and if the insta lust was obvious, the insta love wasn't so much. If that wasn't enough, the book had to have a BDSM scene. Nalini Singh introduced it cleverly, but it still made me roll my eyes...

Also, the secondary characters (Molly's sister, Charlotte and
her mysterious and really hot boss, Fox's band members) hold the promise of great stories to come and instead of having Molly and Fox in the sack for the xth time I wanted to know more about them. It reached a point that at times I was more interested in Charlie and T-Rex relationship as well as Thea and David on going memos... So yes, I'm curious to read the next installment.

Last but not least, last May, Nalini Singh was in Belgium and not only I had the immense pleasure to meet her but she agreed to respond to a short interview. I, along with Deniz (my partner in crime) would love to thank her for taking the time to answer our questions.

The interview will be posted on the Kiss & Tell rubric on September 5th.
