Review: The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Need by Deborah Wilde

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Need

Author: Deborah Wilde
Publisher: Te Da Media
Series: Nava Katz #3
Pages: Kindle Edition, 428 pages
Genre: PNR
Release Date: August 18th 2017

Summary:

Less Hopelessly Devoted, more Worse Things I Could Do.

Nava is hot on the heels of a demonic serial killer and finally working with her brother. The assignment should be a dream come true, not a nightmarish power struggle made worse by her twin's refusal to believe there's corruption within the Brotherhood. Nava is determined to find proof of their dirty dealings, even as she risks irrefutably breaking her sibling bond.

Speaking of clocking annoying males upside the head... Nava is also totally over smoking hot rock star and fellow hunter Rohan Mitra. There is a veritable buffet of boy options out there, and this girl is now all-you-can-eat. So when her demon hunt brings her first love, Cole, back into her life, her revenge fantasies for closure-on all fronts-are a go. Except neither her old wounds nor her new ones are as healed as she believes.

Still, she's got work to do:
Brotherhood: unmask.
Demons: slaughter.
Guy problems: terminate with extreme prejudice.

Review:

This was so frustrating.. can I have the next book please?

Let's cut to the chase. I wanted to smack Nava. Hard. Quite a bit. The romance? Bloody infuriating one way ticket to frustration-ville. But I so enjoyed this book.
It's my favorite in the series not because of the plot or the romance but because I loved, nay adored the character building.
Book 3 picks up one months after book 2 and you get thrown right into the deep end. Lots of action and emotional dramas.
I was a bit annoyed by Nava and Rohan's situation. Okay, allot annoyed. One thing became really clear really fast however Nava needs to let go and start listening. I found her behaviour really frustrating. Pointing fingers, while doing the exact same thing. But she does get her act together, she does try and see someone else's perspective and I love how she resolves things in the end.
We get to see the twins in action together in this book and I love their codes and language, just as much as their disagreements. I think Wilde shines in this, their relationship feels real and tangible. Having siblings I know how one can at the same time be a total odd but love each other beyond anything. The bond between them, feels real.
The same goes to all the different relationships between the main cast. The issues between friends, the Rasha men views of life.. those details are brilliant and make the characters realistic, way more than in the previous books I connected to the crew. I care about them and can't wait to see what they up to next.

The plot is captivating, lots of action and plenty of dramas. But I feel a bit short changed when it comes to both mysteries. Neither was actually solved. Well the one case kinda was, but it is still open ended. The other, we got given so little, way to little. Yet I am not unsatisfied, because there is some closure and I can't wait to hopefully find out more on the mystery in the next book.

The writing style is witty and imaginative, I love it. Yet at times it felt a bit generic- some of the dialogues were a bit like good old classics from 80s blockbusters, especially at the beginning of the book. While I don't mind it much, it also isn't my favorite thing. Thankfully there are plenty of good dialogues and moments around, so the good outways the bad.

The world building was interesting. I actually would have liked some more. Lots of the world building was done in the previous books, there are some new additions, yet those weren't quite enough for me.
However those new additions were imaginative and fun - and just like with the rest of the book, I want more!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even if it was frustrating and heartbreaking at times. It is also swoony, exciting and insightful. My favorite in the series so far and I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment.

Blog Tour: The Perfectly Imperfect Match by Kendra C. Highley

The Perfectly Imperfect Match

Author: Kendra C. Highley
Publisher: Entangled Teen (Crush)
Series: Suttonville Sentinels #3
Pages: Kindle Edition, 218 pages
Genre: YA
Release Date: July 10th 2017

Summary:

Pitcher Dylan Dennings has his future all mapped out: make the minors straight out of high school, work his way up the farm system, and get called up to the majors by the time he’s twenty-three. The Plan has been his sole focus for years, and if making his dreams come true means instituting a strict “no girls” policy, so be it.

Lucy Foster, needlepoint ninja, big sister to an aspiring pitcher, and chicken advocate, likes a little mayhem. So what if she gets lost taking her brother to baseball camp…at her own high school? The pitching coach, some hotshot high school player, obviously thinks she’s a hot mess. Too bad he’s cute, because he’s so not her type.

Problem is, they keep running into each other, and every interaction sparks hotter than the last. But with Dylan’s future on the line, he has to decide whether some rules are made to be broken…

Disclaimer: This book contains a crazy night of moonlit skinny-dipping, a combustible crush, and kisses swoony enough to unwind even the most Type A athlete.

About the Author:

Kendra C. Highley lives in north Texas with her husband and two children. She also serves as staff to four self-important and high-powered cats. This, according to the cats, is her most important job. She believes in everyday magic, extraordinary love stories, and the restorative powers of dark chocolate.

Review:

sigh

So honestly, I've been thinking what I should write in this review for days and days.
Because frankly my response to the book, is a big sigh. A good one mind you, the kind of sigh that is full of contentment and swoony cute & fluffy feels.
Yeah, so basically Highley killed any logical response I am trying to come up with. It is that cute.
The Perfectly Imperfect Match is the third book in the Suttonville Sentinels series and I am pretty sure it's my favorite. I love that we get to revisit the previous books characters. It was an added bonus. But I should mention that this works as a stand-alone as well.. The support cast in this made me love the book even more, I love the different family dynamics. I adore the siblings relationships the most, though not really smooth sailing, it feels authentic and real. Having 3 sisters, being a middle child, meant I could relate to each situation. How ever while we at this, I found the brother's claims a bit annoying. I mean who owns anyone? Why even accept it? Because let's face it each person has his own place with everyone else and I think it's best one gets taught that really early in life, it saves a lot of dramas. I was very glad when that issue was settled.
Lucy and Dylan are both likeable, relatable and I adore them. I am not into baseball at all. But I understand them both a little. I was more of a rebel but I also was always driven. I think most people will be able to relate, because we all a bit of Lucy and Dylan, but more we all search for our way and try to hold to ideas of ourselves when we grow up.

The storyline is sweet and it has most of your typical cute & fluffy elements. But Highley has thrown in some cute twists and made it quite unique with some wonderful details. While I adore the story and I really enjoyed the book, my biggest issue lies in the romance. It is the reason why this is not 5stars for me as well. It was a bit, actually let's just say it as it is: It was a lot too insta for me. I completly got over it by the end but the first half, felt way too insta.

The writing style is just as expected insightful and contemporary. There is some great humor in here. But there are also some amazing, beautiful and moving descriptions. Those are my favorite part of the book and the main reason for my sighing.
I am hoping there is another book in the series, simply because they are the perfect cute and fluffy kind of read. Alas I have no clue what Highley plans to publish next, but I know I will read it.

A great book to take to the lake (or beach) with during a warm day!

Excerpt

Lucy watched Dylan cut through the water with a precise breaststroke. Even his swimming was neat and tidy. She slumped against the bench as he pulled himself onboard and untied the boys’ boat. He stood there, dripping, while their friends cruised away.
“Um…” He swallowed hard and wiped water out of his eyes. “Look—”
“Don’t bother.” She slumped as far as she could without falling off the bench. “I know what you meant. Just because our friends set us up doesn’t mean we have to do anything about it.”
“Hey.” He sounded irritated now. “You don’t understand, and that’s why I’m here. I’m not dating because I’m focused entirely on baseball right now. I have a shot at the minors next spring after we graduate, and I’m putting all my energy into that. It’s not you.” He rubbed his face, shifting his balance like he was going to jump out of the boat any second. “You’re…you’re…well, you’re someone I would definitely chat up under different circumstances.”
Lucy slowly sat up straighter, noticing how his ears had turned red. The little devil on her shoulder, the one that made her impulsive, talked her into pulling her shoulders back and pushing her chest out ever so slightly. Just to see what he’d do. When his eyes drifted, then snapped back to her face, she smirked a little. “Chat me up, huh? Even though you think I’m a hot mess?”
“Did I ever say that?” He crossed his arms over his life vest. “Maybe I questioned your ability to drive places, but I never said you were a mess.” “Uh huh.” She relaxed against the seat, unable to believe it. “You seemed really annoyed that I stayed for camp today. I could almost see the thought bubble over your head, ‘this one’s brought his crazy sister.’”
“I didn’t…” He squeezed his eyes shut and ground his jaw. After a deep breath, he tried again. “I just thought you were a little overprotective. Otis is nine, not two.”
“And who are you to decide that?” Lucy sat up straighter, daring him to look her over. “But, if you want, I’ll stay away from your precious camp. You better take good care of my brother, though, or we’ll have more than words, Coach Dylan.”
She sighed, furious that she’d taken the bait and engaged with this jackass. “You don’t have to stand there like you’re about to jump in the lake if I twitch in your direction. I wouldn’t touch you if you paid me.”
Dylan’s eyes narrowed. As if he was calling her bluff, he unbuckled his life vest and dropped it to the floor. Oh, shirtless boy alert.
Yep, she was right…he was cute. And cut. His blond hair was tinged gold by the setting sun, but her gaze kept straying somewhere else…somewhere tan and muscular. As she watched, his forearms tensed, showing off a pair of arms that demanded her attention.
She met his eyes and found him smirking back at her. Right. “I appreciate the effort, but you’re not my type.”
He rolled his eyes. “You’re not exactly mine, either, Princess.”
She rose, standing with her feet wide apart to compensate for the rocking boat. “And what type is that? Bubble headed? Simpering? Compliant?”
He glared at her. “Disciplined. Smart. Driven.”
She laughed coldly. “I think that’s the wrong kind of girl for you. Too much like-knows-like. You need someone to shake you up, make you live for now instead of a year from now.”
“Oh, and you think you’re the person to do that?”
For some reason, both their voices had risen, but she couldn’t back down. Mom would tell her the passion was getting the better of her, and if only she took a second to breathe, she’d see it. Too late for that now. “I might be, if you removed the stick from your ass.”
He took a step toward her. “Yeah, and you need someone to untangle your hot-mess self.”
She took a big step toward him, pointing a finger at his chest. “I knew you thought I was a hot mess!”
He took another step, but she wasn’t afraid of him. No, she didn’t think she’d ever felt so alive, honestly. Her heart pounded in her chest, and her fingertips tingled. Like she’d been in a dim room, and someone had turned on a floodlight.
“Fine! I did think it, and I’ll say it, too,” Dylan snapped. “You’re a hot mess, Lucy Foster. What are you going to do about it?”
Her mouth dropped open, and her whole body flushed with heat. The next step she took brought her an inch away from him. Close enough to see he was shaking. Rage? Fear? All she knew was that she was shaking, too, but it was from neither of those things. “You know what I think? I think you’re a jackass!”
Then, before she could decide whether this was the worst idea she’d ever had, she swayed closer, so that her chest brushed his just barely, and went up on tiptoe, stopping short of kissing him…waiting to see what would happen.
They stared each other down, each of them breathing hard. Lucy’s gaze dropped to his lips then back to his eyes, daring him to make a move.
He growled, this frustrated, almost anguished sound, before closing the distance. He pulled her close, his wet torso sliding slick against hers. Then his mouth was on hers, and she forgot everything—about being angry, about being stuck in the middle of the lake with a guy who pushed her buttons, about Dad being gone. Nothing mattered but his warm breath against her cheek and his strong arms holding her tight despite the rocking boat beneath them. Good thing, because she was lightheaded, but didn’t want to come up for air.
They clung together, the kiss frantic and disorganized. Somewhere in the back of her brain, she recognized this guy hadn’t let himself go for a long, long time…and that he’d been hurt recently. All of it was there in the depth of this kiss. His chest was warm, heaving against hers, and his fingers traced the line of her bare spine, sending shivers across her back.
She didn’t even hear the other boat approach. No, she didn’t notice a thing until Serena called, “Sweet baby Jesus! I said apologize, not act out a movie star kiss in the middle of my boat!”

Review: The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting by Deborah Wilde

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting

Author: Deborah Wilde
Publisher: Te Da Media
Series: Nava Katz #2
Pages: Paperback, 418 pages
Genre: PNR, Urban Fantasy
Release Date: month 1, 2013

Summary:

50% boobs. 50% sarcasm. 100% new breed of hunter.

After a bumpy start as the only female demon hunter in the top secret Brotherhood of David, Nava Katz heads to Prague for her first undercover mission: unmasking a demon movie star. She’d be all kinds of thrilled if it weren’t for the fact that her fellow hunter-with-benefits, Rohan Mitra, has reclaimed his rock star status and assigned Nava the role of groupie.

Rejecting her “be a good girl and follow orders” directive, Nava unleashes an alter ego guaranteed to hook their celebrity target and drive Rohan crazy. No downside–until she finds herself up against Rohan’s past, the Brotherhood’s antiquated thinking, and her own identity issues, turning her personal life into the bomb that could blow up the entire operation.

Sparkly and deadly; it’s a plan.

Review:

Wait! No!!! And now I have to wait until September. Damnation!
Excuse my profanity, but... Just as I was totally invested in Nava's story, the book ended. And now I have to wait.
Let's backtrack.

I liked book one of the series well enough, it was cute and fun. Totally Wilde's MO, if you ask me.
When I started this book I thought I'll be getting more of the same. Fun, cute, imaginative and your usual PNR rump. Great entertainment. In fact, The Unlikeable Demon Hunter kinda reminds me of Ghost Busters. I am talking about the entertainment factor, the fast pace and the fun dialogues. A bit of light entertainment, that is really imaginative. Oh and then there is the cool factor, that reminds me of Men in Black- just with demons and rabbis.

I wasn't quite buying Nav and Ro's connection until the last quarter of the book. And then, well Wilde went and ripped out my heart!

Somewhere around halfway, this took a turn from entertaining to me being totally invested in the characters. Because the MCs changed from feeling a bit formulaic to unique.
Wilde did a great job at the character building in this installment. There is way less cliche, more unique and a hell of a lot more unexpected.

The plot is fast-paced with a few great twists. There are still your big movie moments, the last scene included, but they now feel like the best thing ever. I honestly hope someone will turn this into an awesome series- you know like Alias but with demons.
Last but not least the world building becomes better and better. I love the mix of myth, history and fantasy. Well constructed!

My only little issue. I was a bit disappointed with how quickly the situation with Asmodeus was solved and I was left with a ton of questions.

Which brings be back to what I said right in the beginning: September? Really?

Review:

Heartbreaking, frustrating and so so good!!

Sarah MacLean is a master! I felt so many emotions reading this, I was frustrated, my heart was sore and I totally loved every second of it.

At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this. It was clear from the get-go that this will be heartbreaking. I wasn't sure I was going to like the story because I wasn't a fan of Malcolm's behavior a few years back. But the amazing thing is MacLean totally redeemed him. I mean totally!
Which is odd considering, how messed up the situation was.

Then again this is a MacLean book and I adore her character building.
The Day of the Duchess absolutely shines when it comes to character building. We get to revisit characters from the previous books. And just as always MacLean write unique and interesting characters that feel realistic.
I could relate to Seraphina and Malcolm alike. I got both of their POV, I felt their heartache and their longing... Incredibly well written.
The cast is made up of strong, interesting characters. Females and males alike feel unique and fascinating.
I have 3 sisters so I know something about sisterly love. And the Talbot sisters portrait sister dynamics and love perfectly. I quite often thought of stuff we would do as sisters and how we would react similarly if we would have been in the same situation. Brilliant, if you ask me. Also made me wonder if MacLean has sisters as well.

Another testament to MacLean's knowledge of her craft is how she weaves historical facts with fiction. How she highlights social-historical situations that we kinda know, but with her fiction, she puts a face to the known facts. With that, the story feels more real but also makes the reader feel more aware of said facts.

The story is heartbreaking and yet also beautiful. Though I did end up feeling rather exasperated with the two of them. The cat and mouse games were tiring, the longing was emotionally exhausting. And yet, I wanted more. I need more, I sure hope there will be more!

Review: Trusting You and Other Lies by Nicole Williams

Trusting You and Other Lies

Author: Nicole Williams
Publisher: Crown Books for Young Readers
Pages: Hardcover, 304 pages
Genre: YA
Release Date: June 20th 201

Summary:

USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Nicole Williams delivers a seductive summer romance worth swooning over. Perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Stephanie Perkins.

Phoenix can't imagine anything worse than being shipped off to family summer camp. Her parents have been fighting for the past two years—do they seriously think being crammed in a cabin with Phoenix and her little brother, Harry, will make things better?

On top of that, Phoenix is stuck training with Callum—the head counselor who is seriously cute but a complete know-it-all. His hot-cold attitude means he's impossible to figure out—and even harder to rely on. But despite her better judgment, Phoenix is attracted to Callum. And he's promising Phoenix a summer she'll never forget. Can she trust him? Or is this just another lie?

Review:
While Trusting You and Other Lies started off feeling kinda predictable, and well it is kinda predictable, it ended up being more than just your summer camp romance romp.

It is cute and all, but it is more of a coming of age story than a romance, despite the fact that the romance is the leading storyline. See in the end it is about trust and second chances, and also love. All of these things do go hand in hand after all.

The good news however is, this is a summer camp romance. While there are some big issues being tackled by Phoenix, there is also plenty of swoony stuff going on.

The character building is rather well done.
I absolutely adore Callum, his seriousness and his sweetness! Phoenix does a lot of growing up during her summer in camp, she also does a lot of teenage mistakes and her black&white views were a bit infuriating. However, I also understood her, I think most readers will be able to relate. I also made me think that once I saw many things as black&white myself and the word compromise was at times non-existent in my vocabulary. But more so I remember not seeing someone else POV as a teenager, simply because I couldn't see it in that moment. I think learning that is one of the most important things growing up.
The support cast is interesting and while some parts are your usual usual, I like the family dynamics. I love how it's totally imperfect but so real and with lots of heart, no matter how Phoenix feel about it.

I think, I should mention, that I am writing this, straight after reading the novel. Trusting You, left me philosophical and swoony. I think this means Williams did a fantastic job.
Some beautiful, insightful moments but also lots of cute & fluffy makes this the perfect summer read in my opinion!

Review:

Okay, let me just mention this first: How gorgeous is the cover?!
Now that we have that out of the way, let's get to what's between the prettiness:
Roar is Carmack's first fantasy and her first YA book as well. I adore her NA romances so I was amped to read this. I also had high expectations mind you!
The writing style is totally Carmack, and as I said, I love her stuff so it's just as expected to my liking.

The world building was interesting. I love the idea, love the details she added. Though I had loads of questions and in fact, I would have liked some more world building. It is however elegantly done, it's interesting and rather unique. Quite a few questions were answered and I anticipate to get more answers in the book... Well, done indeed

The character building, which is usually my favorite when it comes to Carmack books, was done well.

This has quite a big cast and is told from multiple POV. And here lies one of my issues with the book. I didn't like how the POV's suddenly switched. Sometimes in the middle of the paragraph. It could be a layout thing, I read the ARC after all and I hope they at least will add a return between POVs in the published books.
I didn't like Aurora, in the beginning, she was a whiner to be honest, that went on my nerves.
But she grew on me. A lot. As the story went on, I started to see her insecurities and understood where she was coming from.
In fact, I changed my view on several of the characters and I am quite invested in the crew. Saying that however I also have to mention that I am not a huge fan of the two male MCs. The Stormling prince fell too caricaturistic. And Locke, though I actually liked him, he was a tad too cliche most of the time.

The story line had me a wee bit divided. I enjoyed the book. I liked most of the plot. It was a bit predictable at times. But the romance was rather disappointing. It features not one, but two insta-loves.. And both were painfully cliche. Though I would have been fine with the first one, seeing as it evolved. But the second one kinda ruined it for me. Don't misunderstand me I am all for that development, it just way too cliche and way too predictable. I did like some parts of their relationship, just not the melodramatic overused romance cliches that were thrown in.
When it comes to the Stormling plots however, Cormack shines! I enjoyed all the action and I loved the little details we were given and how the story fell into place. I like the ending, even though it's wide open. I am left anticipating where this will go next!

So a fabulous start to a series: great world building, interesting storyline, interesting characters and a gorgeous cover
I can't wait for the next book!

Excerpt:

“No need to burn people from the inside out, Etel. This one is with me.”
A large, masculine form pressed into Rora’s side, and a heavy arm draped over her shoulders. The old woman straightened. She scowled and spit on the ground, and when she spoke, her tone was higher, less raspy, “Ye could have told me that, Locke, before I wasted me time.”
Rora froze. Cassius. He’d found her. She had been so distracted by the woman and her wares that she hadn’t thought to keep watch. He pulled her forward, and her feet dragged like lead. She couldn’t take a deep enough breath, and her eyes began to cloud with tears.
What have I done? How will I explain this? What will he do to me?
“Come on, girl. I’m doing you a favor getting you away from that fraud. You could at least play along.”
Rora lurched to a stop, and jerked her head upward. That wasn’t Cassius. Her hood began to slip backward. She tried to catch it, but her movements lagged behind her mind, and her injured arm had grown stiff and numb. Cool air hit her uncovered cheeks, her nose, then her forehead. Even with the scarf hiding her hair, she might be recognized. And she had a feeling this was a very bad place for a princess to be.
The hood’s descent halted; it wasn’t her fingers that had caught the fabric but his. He was so tall that Rora had to crane her head back to see him. His hair was a dark, wavy brown and hung long enough to brush against his shoulders.
“Keep that hood up. This is no place for little girls.”
“I’m not a little girl!” She clamped her mouth shut, immediately wishing she could take the declaration back. Not only because it sounded exactly like what a little girl would say but also because she had not tempered her volume. At all. And thought it wasn’t Cassius who caught her, he was here somewhere. She bit her lip in worry, and the stranger’s eyes tracked down to her mouth briefly before darting around her face.
He still held on to her hood, keeping it back enough that he could see her eyes. “So you’re not a little girl. Still doesn’t mean this is any place for you.”
She could not argue with that.
“She called you Locke.”
His eyes narrowed. “Yes. And?”
“As in…Prince Locke?”
He laughed so hard that he released her hood. She rushed to grab it and pull it down to cover her face. She had no doubt people were staring now. He sucked in a breath, and then as if he couldn’t help himself, burst into laughter all over again.

Still chuckling, he said, “I’m about as much a prince, as you are a princess.”
